How to enable Nvidia drivers in OpenSUSE 11.1 - 17/01/2009 by Andrew

NOTE: This guide was written using OpenSUSE 11.1 and though I haven't tested it with 11.0, I'm sure it will work fine (otherwise, please leave a comment!).

OpenSUSE, unlike Ubuntu and Mandriva, doesn't automate the installation and configuration of the proprietary Nvidia drivers though by following a few simple steps you can have your Nvidia hardware pumping.

The first step is to add an extra repository. Open YaST, Software, Software Repositories, and then Add. Select 'HTTP' as shown below.

The next step is to enter the repository name, server name and directory on the server (NOTE: Your OpenSUSE version needs to go here). Enter these details as shown below.

Once that's done and the repositories have been refreshed, you should now be able to search and find nvidia drivers in YaST. The drivers that have a plus sign on the icon are the ones that YaST believes are right for your system.

Select these (you selection may be different – all depends on your Nvidia card) and apply.

And that's all there is to it! Just reboot and you'll be using the fast proprietary Nvidia drivers. A good test is to run glxgears before and after, you should get a huge improvement.

I am installing it the hard way, it worked all the time. Nvidia driver is pretty much easier to install compare to ATI.
