Review: FreedroidRPG 0.10.3-3 - 22/04/2008 by Andrew RPG FreedroidRPG is one of those games that if you didn't know it existed, the chances of you stumbling upon it would be slim to none. Unless you're like me and go through the games listing in Ubuntu, madly adding games just to try them out. I actually stumbled upon this game a little before it became part of the Ubuntu repos (the debut was in Gusty 7.10) and decided to give it a shot in Hardy Herron (8.04), which is currently in Release Candidate. The version that was sucked down through apt was 0.10.3-3, which happens to be the latest one on offer over at sourceforge. The game is an RPG in a top down 'Diablo II' style and the gameplay is very similar with the key bindings much the same as the big selling Blizzard game of yesteryear. Don't think that this is the Linux answer to a Diablo II clone – it's not. Though the game is very similar in a number of ways (skills, inventory, health, clickfest mayhem) you are required more to make more thought out decisions when communicating to NPCs and the layout of the areas aren't straightforward. Very quickly in the game you'll need to read and understand what the NPCs are saying, rather than the usual 'yeah yeah yeah, just quest me up and I'll go slashing' that we were used to in Diablo II. This can quickly lead to unfavorably comparing the game, which is bad, since this game obviously isn't set out to be a copy (*cough* Titans Quest *cough*) but to be a proper RPG clickfest with a detailed storyline filled with uber geek humor. There are some shortfalls with the game. Only having one save slot isn't the best - all the best bits of the game can only be experienced once, unless you restart the whole thing. It means that any mistakes made when talking to NPCs become all the more serious as there's no going back to a few save-points ago. Another shortfall is the fact that attacking enemies, even though it's done in the same style as Diablo II, seems much more clunky. There's also no network play. In short – if you're a Diablo II fan and don't mind a bit more RP in your G's then grab this game. 70/100
