Review: The Open Racing Cars Simulator (TORCS) 1.3 - 24/04/2008 by Andrew Racing I'll say it right from the start: TORCS isn't complete. Even though the 1.x version number usually denotes a program that has stepped out from testing and has emerged (gentoo pun) as a complete application. TORCS visually ok, though there are far too many rough edges and I experienced a number of crashes while playing the game. Version 1.3 was released way back in 2006 and there hasn't been a release since. The good news is a new version may being coming out soon, which should hopefully address many of the issues the game currently has. TORCS has actually been around for over 10 years and their website is still quite active, we just haven't seen much release wise coming from the developer team (5 developers in total). One of the biggest issues is driving the car. The physics just doesn't feel right. Steering feels like you got 155/65/13 tyres and you can suddenly get yourself into a spin which looks like you've run over a Mario Kart spec banana peel. Having a serious race can be done, though for this game to be taken seriously it needs to feel like your driving a race car. Polish is something that also also needs to happen. The menu system feels clunky and the in game pit menu feels tacked on. It allowed me to put 1000 litres of fuel in my car and wouldn't let me leave pit lane until that happened. All in all, the future of TORCS can be bright though there's a lot more work left to do as the game feels more like 0.3 than 1.3. I wish them all the best. 30/100
