Review: Wolfenstein 3D - 30/04/2008 by Andrew
First Person Shooter

Wolfenstein 3D was better known for the PC version of the game. It had people upgrading their PC's to 286SX beasts and gave birth to the First Person Shooter genre that we know and love.

The SNES port of the game has been heavily censored and contains no Nazi references in the game (even Hitler's mustache was removed on the final boss). There's no blood (apart from your blood, but I guess that's fine) and the dogs have been turned into giant rats. Apparently it was deemed cruel to shoot dogs. Humans, however, must be ok as there's plenty of these critters to take down.

You'd think this would detract from the game...and you'd be right. The SNES port is unable to recreate the feel of being a prisoner of war that comes across a gun and proceeds to shoot his way out via thousands of Nazi soldiers. The good news is you soon forget about this as you race through the levels shooting everything that moves.

The graphics aren't that bad considering the SNES has to handle a 3D engine – a tough ask in my book. You can immediately notice the quality differences between this and the PC version though it's not something that detracts from the game itself.

Game play is, as it was back in the day, fantastic. Some of the levels can be quite challenging, even on the 'easy' difficulty. Your modern day twitch skills will not help you here.

If you're wondering if this will turn up on the Wii's Virtual Console, I'd say not to hold your breath. The SNES version was no where near as popular as the PC version and without the authenticity of the original, you can see why.

It's still a good game, just not a great one. Even if it did push the SNES to the limits.

60/100
