Review: California Games - 01/05/2008 by Andrew Sports I don't think there's another game that captured the 80's feel as much as California Games did. If you weren't a kid in the 80's you probably won't find aspects of the game amusing, like choosing your team amongst names like 'Santa Cruz Skateboards', 'Ocean Pacific' and 'Maxx-out'. Like, totally radical man. California Games was released by Epux in 1987 and was ported to everything that beeped and clicked. The NES port was honest, though not as good as some of the other offerings such as the Sega Master System version of the game, which was much better in both graphics and sound. Gameplay on the SMS version also felt more fluid, making the game easier to play (add another 25 to the score for the SMS version). The NES version is still worthwhile and it has been announced that a port (either from the NES or SMS) is coming to the Wii's Virtual Console. If you never played California Games I wouldn't race out and get it, though if you played it as a kid it's worth it just to bring back some fond memories of whipping righteous turns and getting all tubular. 55/100
