Review: Mario Bros. - 04/05/2008 by Andrew Platform Originally released as an arcade game in 1983 by Nintendo it was also ported to the NES that same year. This wasn't the first game to feature Mario as back in 1981 he was fighting Donkey Kong, though it is the first game to have his brother Luigi. The aim of the game is pretty simply; Mutated turtles (no mention of Ninja skills), flies and crabs are pouring out of the sewer pipes and the Mario and Luigi have to save the city. It's also pay day for Mario and Luigi as money comes out of the pipes after you destroy the mutant critters. The action is all on one screen and two player mode is co-operative played at the same time. It's not always co-operative though as it's extremely difficult to jump over the other player so you can set out to kill your brother if you're that way inclined. There's also a series of 'Skill Tester' phases that allow you to collect as many coins as possible before a timer runs out. No extra life for this, just points. This game was available as part of the Wii's Virtual Console quite early on for 500 points, though I'd personally spend that on the sequel Super Mario Bros. as this is more like the Mario we know and love (side scrolling levels, jumping on things, rescuing Princess Peach). Mario Bros. was still a good game back in 1983, though it wasn't ground breaking. 60/100
