Review: Street Fighter 2 - The World Warrior - 03/03/2008 by Andrew
Fighting

Street Fighter 2 is a classic amongst fighting games. Though Street Figher 1 (released in the arcades on the 30th of August 1987) was only a moderate hit, when Street Fighter 2 was released on the 10th of June 1992 the popularity soared. I can fondly remember feeding the SF2 arcarde machine all my gold coins and usually picking the characters that I knew could get a lengthy game out of as well as fend of any challenges. When it was ported to Nintendo it became one of the must have games. Back then, it was like having an arcade machine in your living room. Ahh, bliss.

As much as I'm a huge fan of the the SNES version, and downloaded it on the Wii's Virtual Console as soon as it was available, I don't believe it was better than the Sega Genesis version. Only having four buttons meant that the top two buttons also had to be used, and strangly they defaulted to the heavy kick and heavy punch. The fix is just a option setting away, but there was something about the Genesis controller having the exact layout needed...and truth be told, the Genesis version looked better.

This in no way makes the SNES version the ugly cousin, it still holds it's own. Playing this game two player is retro gold. I've seen people quite ho hum about Wii bowling, but get them infront of this and they turn into screaming animals and the taunts of yesteryear come flooding back.

If you were flicking through the Wii's Virtual Channel, or you happen to find this in a garage sale, it's well worth whatever they're asking (not much). On the Wii, the same money will buy you Championship Edition giving you 4 more character choices but much the same in every other respect. If you're a fan of the game then you've probably got a copy somewhere - time to dust it off and sonic boom Chun Li.

65/100
