Review: Powermanga 0.90 - 10/08/2008 by Andrew Shoot-em-up To cut to the chase, Powermanga is a 2D scrolling shoot-em-up that has nothing to do with Japanese cartoon characters abusing steroids. Version 0.90 was released in September 2007, so it looks like development has either ground to a halt or is very very slow. Requirements are very lean, which means anything 486 and up can play this game. Unfortunately, with these lax requirements, you don't get cutting edge graphics. With a maximum resolution of 640x400 you can't expect much in the way of eye candy though this doesn't matter a great deal, as the gameplay is fantastic. It's a bit of a throw back to Space Invaders, but with power ups, bosses, asteroids and other weird oddities thrown in. The mission is pretty simple; Destroy everything that moves, unless it's shiney then it's probably a power up. Different coloured powerups do different things which make your job of destroying everything that moves that little bit easier. Simply huh? To protect you from those nasty space monsters, you have shield that soaks up some damage and then takes a bit of time to recharge. So to die, you have to take some sustained damage. No second life here (not a pun), you just get the one life. This game looks like it's aimed more at the younger player (as in single digit), though you can get a few old school kicks out of it. Not much in it for long term play, and there's no multiplayer or network play. It does suit the EeePC, with the 640x400 resolution scaling nicely within the 800x480 resolution of the 700/701. If you're looking for a simple space shooter to keep the kids entertained for a bit, or just wanting to relive mid 90's space shooters – give it a go.
